Ethiopia 2018 – A beautiful country with beautiful people on the eve of genocide
In late 2018, I travelled through Ethiopia — from the sun-scorched Danakil Depression in the north to the lush southern highlands of the coffee region. Just weeks later, war broke out.
These images capture a land of startling contrasts: sulphur fields and salt flats, jungle and dust, dignity and decay. Life here is tough. Yet amidst scarcity and struggle, people radiate warmth, humour and pride.
What I found was not despair, but resilience woven into the fabric of daily life — in faces, gestures, and improvised shelter. This is Ethiopia on the brink, suspended between beauty and violence.
